Further Education vs Commercial IT Learning

When he first became Prime Minister, Tony Blair proudly stated that his party’s message was “Education, Education, Education. A praiseworthy enough focus and certainly not something we would think of associating with frustration and high personal debt. But as time has gone on, as more and more colleges have gained university status, and student loans have become easily available to all, schools have encouraged greater numbers of young people to go for higher education without actually spelling out the cost.

It’s not in question that we require a much more educated society, but is everyone often obtaining the right advice? Let’s be honest; is it such a difficult sell to persuade an eighteen year old to leave home and live with a bunch of friends, not worry about obtaining a job for three or four years and get cheap beer at the student union bar. A over simplified interpretation maybe – of course there’s a bit of lessons to attend, and a degree of juggling to make ends meet, then the rewards will be worth it in the end. Or will they? For a lot of families, the cost of university education continues for a long period after graduation, both socially and financially.

The student loan system (the best method of borrowing for university undergraduates), fees for tuition, accommodation and general costs of living over the course duration can set you back well over £30,000 – with no guarantee of work. It’s ironic that freedom-seeking teenagers out to conquer the world too often are forced to return home because they can’t find work. Not only do fathers and mothers still have to support them financially, but unemployed adult children back home again can definitely cramp their style!

A university education can be a fulfilling experience for young people, and is the only road for many of our professions. But schools and parents ought to know that in some areas, there are other, sometimes better alternatives. As far as IT is concerned, employers are desperate for commercially qualified IT professionals. University graduates often end up having to supplement their computer training skills to be ready for work and compete in the job market with Microsoft, CompTIA or Cisco professionals. The sorry thing is they might have qualified two to three years earlier and not been burdened with a unmanageable debt had they gone straight to a commercial interactive computer training provider. Possibly drinking in the university bar isn’t such good value after all – certainly the family bank account would be a lot less used up, and there’d probably be more seating left on the sofa!.
